FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern softball team (17-21) took two wins Friday against the Albany State Rams (21-19) at the AD Griffin Sports Complex. The Sharks won game one, 8-0, in five innings before taking game two, 5-2.

GAME ONE

Erika Garcia (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) (2-3) had another stellar performance in the circle, striking out four batters and allowing just three hits on the day. Garcia was also able to get it going offensively, going 1-for-2 with two RBI.

After a scoreless first, the Sharks put the game away in the second inning, scoring six runs on four Rams errors. Chelsea Emery (Sr., Eustis, Fla.) got things going by singling through the left side for a base hit. After a Shelby Talon (Fr., Boynton Beach, Fla.) single, Chrissy Tabulov (Fr., Palm Harbor, Fla.) was able to reach base on an errant throw from the shortstop, that allowed her to advance to second and score Emery from third for the first run of the game. Elizabeth Spring (Fr., West Palm Beach, Fla.) kept things going with a RBI single up the middle. Later in the inning, with the score 4-0, Garcia crushed a ball to the left centerfield fence, scoring Elizabeth Spring (Sr., Miami, Fla.) and Samira Tanaka (Jr., Sao Paulo, Brazil).

With the third and fourth innings producing no runs, the Sharks were able to end it in the fifth, with two more runs, putting the mercy rule into effect. The first run came on a throwing error by the catcher, allowing pinch runner Marissa Raimo (Sr., Hampton Bays, N.Y.) to score from third. The game’s final run of the game was on a Melanie Spicola (Sr., Umatilla, Fla.) groundout to second, that easily scored Talon from third.

The Sharks outhit the Rams 7-3.

GAME TWO

The Sharks completed their fourth straight win by taking advantage of four more Albany State errors and some late-game heroics. The Sharks had a bit more trouble with Albany State’s Alexa Lopez, but Tanaka continued to cruise by going 2-for-3 with a RBI. Talon and Spicola also recorded a RBI in the game.

The Sharks got on the board in the third inning with a pair of runs. Spring started the rally with a one-out infield single and advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. Spicola knocked one through the right side, scoring Spring. Later with Spicola on third base, the slapper Tanaka hit a bunt single that drove her home.

Jennie Von Doellen (Jr., Hudson Bay, Canada), who earned her 13th win of the season, held the Rams scoreless through five innings. In the sixth, Von Doellen hit the leadoff batter, and with two outs on the board, allowed a home run from Chelsea Hicks to tie the game.

With the opposition threatening to upset or take the game into overtime, the Sharks responded quickly by throwing a three-spot on the board in the sixth, pushing the score to 5-2. The Rams put three out of the first four batters faced in the side on base by either a walk or hit by pitch. The Sharks pounced on a Rams mistake, as Raimo scored on a wild pitch to retake the lead.

Talon continued the rally with a RBI infield single that scored pinch-runner Tabulov. The Sharks earned their final run of the day when Emery scored on an error from third base.

Von Doellen allowed only three hits in the contest and struck out 11 batters.

The Sharks will take a week off before their next home weekend series against Lynn on April 5 at 6 p.m.
